Winter Storytelling : Stone Soup
The weather continues to bite and we continue to warm our bellies with soups, stews and casseroles. A favourite in Waldorf Kindergartens and in our home is “Stone Soup”. A simple and nourishing stew that when accompanied with the magical story below will have even the pickiest of eaters enjoying all of their vegetables!
Read or tell the story each day for a week and then make an effort to go looking for a round smooth stone to use in your own stone soup. Wash it well and then have you child place it in the pot with all the other vegetables.
Our recipe is simple enough- sautee some onion and garlic in a pot with olive oil, add roughly chopped root vegetables of choice, cover with water or bone broth or vegetable broth and a tablespoon or so of tomato paste (optional), simmer until the veggies are soft, add chopped greens or fresh parsley at this point if you like until their wilted and then season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with buttered bread or on top of a bed of rice. Sometimes we add a dollop of sour cream to the soup or a tablespoon of sauer kraut.
